MEZZANINE FIRE PROTECTION

Fire protection refers to a set of measures and systems that are designed to prevent fires from occurring, or to limit the damage and spread of fires when they do occur. Fire protection measures can include various types of fire detection, fire suppression, and fire prevention systems.

 

Types of fire protection 

• Fire-resistant materials: This includes fire-rated materials such as suspended ceiling tiles and walls that provide at least 30 minutes of fire resistance and columns treated with fire-retardant paint or cladding that provides at least an hour of fire resistance. 
• Safe stairway enclosures: These areas must provide protection from fire and a safe escape route for people exiting the mezzanine in the event of a fire. 
• Fire suppression systems: These systems are designed to extinguish or control fires, such as sprinkler systems, water mist systems, or foam systems.

Is Fire Protection a legal requirement for Mezzanines?

In the UK, fire protection requirements for mezzanines are governed by the Building Regulations, which provide guidance on construction and fire safety standards. Part B of Building Regulations refers to fire safety. The specific requirements for fire protection of mezzanines will depend on the size and intended use of the mezzanine.

Generally, mezzanines that are used for commercial or industrial purposes, or that are larger than a certain size, will be subject to fire protection requirements. For example, mezzanines used as offices, warehouse assembly or retail spaces. Mezzanines used solely for storage purposes may not require fire protection, but there are exceptions to this rule which depend on the size of the mezzanine in relation to the building.
